Fr. Jonathan McElhone, T.O.R.

I was born and raised near Delhi, Ontario Canada, the middle of three children and grew up working on the family farm. During high school I became involved with my parish youth group and developed a real love for our Catholic faith and for Jesus Christ. After a three year college program in robotics and automation (factory assembly equipment), I spent two years serving with NET Ministry (National Evangelization Teams) based out of St. Paul MN facilitating retreats for junior high and high school students around the country. These were two very enjoyable years. Moving back to Ontario, I volunteered with parish youth groups and worked for three years as an electrician in an automotive factory.
In 2002 I left my job to study at Franciscan University of Steubenville OH in pursuit of a vocation towards the priesthood while having no clue where that would lead me. I spent three wonderful years there immersed in studies and the priestly formation program (a discernment program for men considering the priesthood). It was during my final year at the university that I became good friends with one of the friars who introduced me to the Franciscans TOR community. After completing my BA in philosophy in 2005, I applied, was accepted, and started my formation time in Loretto, PA with the Franciscan TOR’s – Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. Two years later, on July 7, 2007 (that’s right 07-07-07) I professed first vows of poverty, chastity and obedience (a really grace - filled experience) and started my formal seminary studies at The Catholic University of America in Washington DC. One year of these studies was spent working fulltime as a campus minister for St. Francis University in Loretto, PA.
On Nov. 26 2011 I was ordained a transitional deacon at which time I served at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Cheverly, MD. I concluded my seminary studies with a Masters of Divinity (M-Div) and graduated in May of 2012 from CUA. I arrived here at Good Shepherd Catholic Community for the beginning of June and served as a deacon here until my priestly ordination by Bishop Kevin Vann which took place on Nov. 3, 2012. Since then I have been privileged to serve the good people at Good Shepherd as a priest and look forward to the many blessings our Lord has in store for all of us.
Current hobbies include cycling (mountain and road) as well as playing guitar and singing. I also enjoy volleyball, NASCAR, ultimate Frisbee and hiking, as well as a host of other sports and outdoor activities. I still have a knack for taking just about anything apart and fixing it, or at least trying to (hard to remove the farm boy from me). One of my favorite scripture verses is Phil 4:4-7 which starts off with: “Rejoicing in the Lord always, I say it again: rejoice….” Feel free to ask me why I like it so much. May our Lord bless you abundantly!
