“Follow Me”: The Challenge of Mark’s Gospel

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ [the Son of God].” Thus, begins the Gospel According to Mark. Unlike an historian, the evangelist does not seek to satisfy the reader’s curiosity or lack of knowledge with information; neither does he seek to entertain the reader for amusement as a novelist does. Rather, Mark announces Jesus. He confronts the reader with a person, the Messiah, in whom God is present and challenges the reader to follow this Messiah.
