Natural Family Planning (or NFP) is a natural and effective form of family planning. It teaches you to understand your body's natural signs of fertility. The Billings Ovulation Method, which is taught at Good Shepherd, can be used by a woman at all stages of life - postponing pregnancy, achieving pregnancy, postpartum, pre-menopause, and even with irregular cycles.
The Billings Ovulation Method® has been scientifically shown to be 99.5% effective, assuming the couples properly follow the method.
Natural Family Planning is also the only form of family planning that is in accordance with the Catholic Church's teaching. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states (CCC 2370):
"Periodic continence, that is, the methods of birth regulation based on self-observation and the use of infertile periods is in conformity with the objective criteria of morality. These methods respect the bodies of the spouses, encourage tenderness between them, and favor the education of an authentic freedom."
For more information on the Church’s teaching on NFP, please read Humanae Vitae, the 1968 papal encyclical in which Pope Paul VI reaffirmed the Church’s teaching on human sexuality, married love and responsible parenthood. Click here for the full text of the document.
