Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based approach to the religious formation of children, rooted in Sacred Scripture and Liturgy. The catechesis takes place in a specially prepared environment called an Atrium. The word atrium refers to the early Church’s entrance space which lay between the street and the inner sanctum of the church.
The catechesis recognizes that even very young children have a religious life and aims to nurture an intimate relationship with God. CGS was developed by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew scholar and theologian, and Gianna Gobbi, in Rome in 1954. It has spread throughout the world, and it is used in homes, parishes, and schools worldwide.
Using Montessori principles of education over a three-year cycle, the catechist listens with the children to Scripture and ponders together the person of Jesus including the infancy narratives, the narratives of the Last Supper, Easter, and Pentecost. They also listen to the parables of the Kingdom of God. The children are given materials that allow them to mediate through the work of their hands, on each Scripture they have heard. There are also materials to lead to a deeper understanding of and then participation in the Mass and sacraments, such as a model altar and sacristy cabinet, vestments and liturgical colors, gestures of epiclesis and offering, and baptism. Classes are structured to offer a time of prayer and song, a time for “presentation”, and a time for individual work by the child. The work of the child becomes an opportunity for meditation and prayer.

Good Shepherd Catholic Community offers Level 1 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for the 3–6-year-old child. This level could be characterized as a time of joy and wonder in the lives of the children. The theme for this level is the Good Shepherd who loves his sheep and gives everything for them. Mediation on Jesus as a shepherd who is deeply “good” and who gives His life for His sheep is at the center of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd.
